Mesa de Anguila Details
Calling all the expert hikers out there, here is a challenge for you. The Mesa de Anguila Trail is a difficult 15-mile out and back trail that takes you across all different types of terrain. You will get to visit multiple peaks and even a tinaja, a natural bowl that can hold water like a jar, and the views can't be beat. This part of the park is very isolated and not commonly traveled, but packs a punch with stunning vistas around every corner. This is an all-day excursion or you can split it up and spend the night in one of the great campsites halfway up the mesa. Make sure to bring plenty of water and sun protection and remember to grab a backcountry permit before heading out. This hike requires a map and compass, so make sure you are well prepared before beginning this hike. You have to access the trailhead from outside the park in the town of Lajitas. Get on FM 170 and turn south at the stables to follow the road to the parking area. The trail is well marked until you reach the park boundary.
