Big Bend Conservancy Details
Founded in 1995 by Lori Palmer and her husband, Russ Jewert, the Big Bend Conservancy's purpose is to raise funds, promote and protect Big Bend National Park. After 20 years of visiting the park, Palmer and Jewert noticed that it had no "Friends" groups for financial support, so they founded Big Bend Conservancy and have been helping to raise money for it ever since. They designed license plates for the park that have been available for purchase since 1997 and the proceeds go towards the park. The organization applies for grants on behalf of the park and as well as seek out private donations. To date, they have raised over $3.2 million for the park. Some of their projects have included, the Boquillas Border Crossing Station, improvements on the Fossil Bone Exhibit and the restoration of the Rio Grande Village wetlands.
