Wildlife Loop Road Details
This road loops south from Highway 6a through Custer State Park. It is a prime spot for viewing many of the area's iconic large wildlife, like Bighorn Sheep, Pronghorn Antelope, deer, elk, coyote, and prairie dogs. You are almost guaranteed to see a large herd of buffalo here as well -- they might even cross the road in front of your car. These animals are normally very peaceful, but don't be fooled: they can run faster than you think, and can do a lot of damage to you and your car if aggravated. Along the southern part of the drive, you might also see a herd of burros, or donkeys. The burros are descendants of a herd that was once used to give tours of the park, and they are still very friendly to humans. No matter how much they beg you for food, please refrain from feeding the burros or any of the other animals in the park.
