Wildlife Details
The Black Hills region is home to some iconic wildlife, including buffalo (or bison), elk, and pronghorn antelope. You can often see large herds of buffalo or antelope roaming the prairies, or even blocking the road. Be careful not to get too close to these wild animals. They are large, and surprisingly fast, and can do serious damage to a human or even a car. Coyote are also quite common in the region. Large cats like mountain lions and bobcats are present, but rarely seen. There are also deer and rabbits as well as prairie dogs, which live in "towns" in open sections of prairie. In the Spearfish region of Black Hills National Forest, you might also catch a glimpse of a mountain goat or two scaling the steep canyon walls.
