The Black Hills sit at the intersection of grasslands, prairie, woodlands, and mountains, supporting a wide array of plant life. The forests are predominantly Ponderosa Pine, though you should not be surprised to also see apple trees, elms, oaks, hawthorns, ash trees, cottonwood trees, birch trees, aspens and junipers. The two parks also are home to a plethora of tall grass and short grass, mosses, mushrooms, and other fungi. In drier regions you can find six different species of cactus, including prickly pear, pincushion cactus, and Nylon hedgehog cactus. The parks also feature wildflowers from the prairie, woodland and riparian ecosystems, including agave, bellflowers, cashews, primrose, grape, honeysuckle, lilies, morning glories, nightshade, pigweed, poppy, sunflower, verbena and violet.
