Top Events Details

In mid-December, Wind Cave National Park hosts its annual Holiday Bird Count. The event is modeled after National Audubon Society efforts to study changes in bird populations during winter. Participants spend the day identifying birds, followed by a potluck dinner where everyone compiles their finds from the day. The park also hosts a Christmas open house, which takes place at the visitor center and includes a Christmas tree lighting and carols sung by the Hot Springs Elementary School's third-grade class. In April, the park hosts the South Dakota National Park Treasurers: Through the Voices of our Youth. Fourth-grade students from Rockyford Elementary School and Custer Elementary School write and perform a song about the wind cave with a local Native American musician. Wind Cave and the Black Hills National Forest also participate in BioBlitz weekend, an event focused on spring bird migration. Families can go on beginner bird walks, learn how to band a bird, and build a bird box. More advanced birders can participate in an observation program and submit their finds to the national BioBlitz data base.
