The Centennial Trail Details
The Centennial Trail is one of two, 100-plus-mile trails through the Black Hills region. The trail travels 111 miles from Wind Cave National Park to Bear Butte in northern South Dakota. It was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of South Dakota's statehood and to show off the diversity of the state's rivers, lakes, prairies, forests, mountaintops, and herds of wild buffalo. You can access the trail from several points in the Black Hills National Forest: the Sheridan Lake Campground trailhead, the Dakota Point trailhead (located on the northern shores of Sheridan Lake), the Brush Creek trailhead off of Route 159, and the Rapid Creek trailhead on the eastern shores of Pactola Reservoir. The trail gains 2,400 feet over the course of its 111 miles, and is rated moderate despite its great length.
