Pactola Recreation Area Details
North of Sheridan Lake, near the intersection of Highway 385 and Route 44, Pactola Reservoir is another perfect family getaway, with a range of activity options. This is the largest and deepest body of water in the Black Hills National Forest, and a prime location for fishing and other water activities. In addition to slip and mooring rentals, you can rent a fishing boat, pontoon boat, ski boat, kayak, or canoe. The lake has three boat launch ramps, one of which is reserved for non-motorized boats. Wake surfing and water skiing are also very popular at Pactola Reservoir, as is another adventurous activity: cliff diving. In between all the fun, eat at lunch or relax at one of the area's three picnic areas: Pactola Point, Veterans Point, and Jenney Gulch. Several hiking and biking trails also start at Pactola Reservoir, such as the Osprey Trail, and the reservoir complex has a grocery store and cafe where you can buy gas, do your laundry, or even take a hot shower. The reservoir has a campground with 88 sites, as well as a large group campground perfect for family reunions and other large gatherings. The entry fee is $6 per day, and campsites are $24 per night.
