Backcountry Information Details
Backcountry camping is allowed in Wind Cave National Park, but only in the northwest area bounded by Beaver Creek on the south, Highway 87 on the west, NPS-5 on the north, and Highland Creek Trail on the east. Get a free backcountry permit from the visitor center. Black Hills National Forest has hundreds of miles of hiking trails, providing ample opportunity for multi-day backpacking trips. You can backcountry camp in any part of the National Forest outside of established campgrounds, near lakes, or close to other developed facilities. No permits or fees are required. Backcountry camping is limited to a maximum of 14 days in any 60-day period. In parts of Wyoming, you are allowed to build campfires in the backcountry. South Dakota does not permit campfires in the backcountry. Check in at the visitor center or any of the ranger district offices for more detailed information.
