Plan Around Climbing

Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Climbing Details
Though climbing the face(s) of Mount Rushmore is strictly prohibited, rock climbing is permitted in other areas within the memorial; accessible areas are outlined in a brochure found in the Information Center and at the Lincoln Borglum Visitor Center, or check with a park ranger. Outside the memorial, check with local climbing outfitters and guides to determine where best to climb when visiting the area, including the backside of the memorial and the nearby Olton's Shoulder. Aside from the memorial itself, the Black Hills are filled with climbing opportunities with its many granite "needles" jutting skyward.
