FAQ Details
A few answers to some common queries about Badlands National Park. Why the name Badlands? The area was first named by the Lakota people. They called it "land bad" or "mako sica" due to its harsh conditions. French trappers found similar difficulties with the area, calling it "bad lands to travel through" or "les manuvais terres pour traverse." How can I see some bison? You're in luck! Badlands hosts a herd of bison in the Badlands Wilderness Area; from the Sage Creek Rim Road, you can typically see bison, sheep, and other wildlife. What's the best place to see the sunrise? Some of the most beautiful prairie sunsets can be viewed from Conata Basin Overlook, Bigfoot Pass Picnic Area, Norbeck Pass, and Pinnacles Overlook. On the north side of the Badlands Wall you can see a great sunset as well if you're on the Castle Trail. Okay, best trail in Badlands ... go! The short answer is: all of them are great. If you're looking for something in particular, the Notch Trail, at 1.5 miles, is a moderate hike. For something longer and more hefty, try the Castle Trail.
