Bicycling Details

You can enjoy bicycling on Badlands' designated dirt, gravel, and paved roads. On hiking trails, off-road, off-trail, closed roads, and the backcountry of Badlands, however, bicycling isn't allowed. Always watch for cars and make sure to wear proper gear to protect against road hazards and the direct and often scorching sunlight. Badlands Loop Road is a fun but challenging ride; some areas of difficulty include Norbeck Pass, Dillon Pass, Pinnacles Pass, and Cedar Pass. However, there is also a 22-mile mostly downhill option: start your ride eight miles south of Wall, S.D., and you'll end at the Ben Reifel Visitor Center. Another option on the Badlands Loop Road begins at the Fossil Exhibit Trail; this ride ends at the visitor center, as well. If you ride a fat-tire bike, you can take the gravel path of the Sage Creek Rim Road. You'll pass Roberts Prairie Dog Town and parts of the White River Badlands. For this one-way, 22-mile haul, you'll find abundant wildlife: be on the lookout for American Bison.
