Accessibility in Badlands National Park

Accessibility

The Badlands were once described by George Armstrong Custer as "hell with the fires burned out," but park visitors will find it far more accessible than that.

Accessibility Details

The Ben Reifel Visitor Center, open year around, has accessible restrooms, an information desk, drinking water, and interactive exhibits. With reserved parking and ramps, the center is accessible at all points of entry. The films offered are open-captioned, as well. Two sites at the Cedar Pass Campground offer access to those in wheelchairs. These are first-come, first-serve, and are fairly level. Cold water and restrooms are available in the summer months, and a vault toilet is available in the winter. There is a pay telephone at the campground office, also accessible by wheelchair. In the amphitheater, nightly programs are given in the summer months: this space is wheelchair accessible as well. A less-accessible option is the Sage Creek Campground, which features more rustic camping with vault toilets and no water. Over its rugged terrain, wheelchair users may need help. The Fossil Exhibit Trail is a one-quarter-mile loop that's accessible by wheelchair. Another trail accessible by wheelchair is the Window Trail, with a boardwalk and reserved parking available. The Door Trail and Cliff Shelf Nature Trail are also great offerings for those with accessibility needs. For picnics, the Bigfoot Picnic Area may be your best bet, with access via ramps, parking, and a vault toilet. Another accessible picnicking option is the Conata Picnic Area, although it has slightly rough terrain. The scenic overlooks in Badlands are mostly accessible to those in wheelchairs. Reserved parking is available in most cases. For more accessibility information, check in with the rangers at any visitor center.
