Cook's Lake Cattle Mount Details
Prior to the Civil War, free-ranging livestock roamed the Congaree Swamp, and settlers in the area constructed cattle mounts as refuge for hogs, cattle and other grazing animals during flooding seasons. The Cook's Lake Cattle Mount is just three feet high, but an astounding 165 feet around, the top of which is level and covered with hardwood trees. Like most places listed on the National Register, the property on which the mount is found is privately-owned and not open to the public.
