Wizard Island Tours Details
For those seeking a little more adventure, the Wizard boat tour offer an opportunity to get out on Wizard Island and explore, hike, fish, and swim. The morning cruise departs the Cleetwood Cove boat docks at 9:45 a.m. and returns at 3:00 p.m. The afternoon cruise departs the Cleetwood Cove boat docks at 12:45 p.m. and returns at 5:00 p.m. Like the Standard Tour, the Wizard Tour takes you to see the major sights of Crater Lake, including the Phantom Ship and the Old Man of the Lake (a 30-foot-tall tree stump that has been floating in the lake for over a century). The cruise out to Wizard Island is approximately 45 minutes. A park ranger is on board to provide information about all of the sights you see on the way. At Wizard Island, the boat drops you off and leaves you to explore for three hours. You can hike to the summit of Wizard Island to see the miniature caldera at the top, or follow a trail along rocky Fumarole Bay. You can also fish -- no license required, as long as you use artificial bait -— swim, or just relax and take in the scenery. W hen the boat picks you back up, you’ll finish the counterclockwise tour of the lake, with the opportunity to view more geographical and historical landmarks. The return trip takes around 75 minutes. The only way to access the boat tour is to hiked down the steep Cleetwood Cove Trail, a 1.1-mile (one way) trail that descends 700 feet from the caldera rim to the boat dock on the lake shore. The hike is not recommended for people with poor fitness or health problems. Estimate at least 1.5 hours to hike from Rim Village to Cleetwood Cove. And remember, once you get off the boat at the end of your cruise, you still have to hike back uphill for 1.1 miles. Wizard Tour tickets for adults cost $57; for children 3-11 tickeys cost $36 (kids under the age of two are not permitted). Starting in early July, there is limited availability to register for tours in advance. Tickets also may be purchased in person at the self-serve ticketing kiosks located at the top of Cleetwood Cove hiking trail; in the lobby of the Crater Lake Lodge; and in the Annie Creek Gift Shop at Mazama Village, up to 24 hours before you want to go on the tour. Tour schedules may change or be cancelled unexpectedly due to weather.
