Trees and Plants Details
When Crater Lake National Park was established in 1902, commercial logging had not yet become commonplace in Oregon. Thus, most of the park's forests are old growth, though the trees are not very tall due to the area's short growing season and nutrient-poor soil. The park is divided into four forest zones, based on elevation and predominant tree type. At the lower elevation, around 4,000 feet, the forests are dominated by Ponderosa Pine. Around 5,000 feet, Lodgepole Pine becomes the predominant species. Mountain Hemlock takes over around 6,000 feet; this zone has the last tall trees in the park. Higher elevations, from 7,000 feet and up, see more open woodlands consisting largely of Whitebark Pine.
