Backpacking Details

In addition to numerous day hikes, the park offers more experienced and solitude-seeking visitors the opportunity to venture into the backcountry for multi-day trips. In particular, Crater Lake National Park includes part of the Pacific Crest Trail, a 2,659-mile backpacking route traversing the west coast of the United States. The Alternate PCT Rim Trail takes thru-hikers and backpackers along the rim of Crater Lake by descending the Dutton Creek Trail and following the lake's rim for six miles. Hikers turn away from the lake at the North Entrance Road and rejoin with the main PCT near Grouse Hill. Overnight camping is not permitted on the alternate trail along the lake rim. Visitors can get a free Backcountry Permit at the Rim Village, Steel Visitors Center, or the Park Headquarters Ranger Station. With the permit, you can park your car at Park Headquarters or Rim Village and venture into the park overnight. Backpackers are encouraged to pack out their waste and required at a minimum to bury human waste six inches deep and at least 100 feet away from any water source, campsite, or trail. For more detailed information on regulations for backcountry camping and backpacking in the park download the [summer backcountry use guide](https://www.nps.gov/crla/planyourvisit/upload/2010-summer-bc-use-sb.pdf). In the winter, backcountry camping is the only overnight option. As in the summer, overnight visitors are required to get a free permit from the visitor's center. Parking is available at Park Headquarters and Rim Village. Visitors are responsible for their own safety and are encouraged to be aware of avalanche danger.
