Ohio & Erie Canal Towpath Trail Details
The main Ohio & Eric Towpath Trail stretches 82 miles along the Cuyahoga Valley alongside the Cuyahoga River and the remnants of the Ohio & Erie Canal, and there also are many miles of connector and feeder trails to explore by bike or on foot. The main Towpath Trail follows the same path trodden by the mules that once pulled canal boats loaded with goods and travelers between Cleveland and Akron. Most of the trail is level and hard-packed, making it accessible to wheelchairs and strollers as well as bicycles, although not inline skaters. You can use the trail to explore countless natural and historic sites within Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Bikers or hikers can use the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway to bike or hike one way and return on the train. The Towpath Trail is open 24 hours a day and year-round; during winter it is popular for cross-country skiing.
