More than 2 million people annually visit the Ohio & Erie Canalway, a recreation corridor that follows the path of the Ohio & Erie Canal, built in the 1820s and 1830s to link Lake Erie and the Ohio River. Perhaps best known for its Towpath Trail, a favorite recreation route for runners and bikers, the Canalway is a designated National Heritage Area that also includes canal towns, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway, and of course the locks and waterways associated with the canal itself. A variety of museums -- through static displays and living-history demonstrations -- help you explore the rich history of the Cuyahoga Valley, including farm life, the impact of the canal, and industrial development in the region.
