Deep Lock Quarry Trailhead Details
Also known as Lock 28, this historic area lined with the park's famous buckeye trees is home to the deepest lock on the Ohio & Erie Canal, measuring 17 feet. The old quarry, located just beyond the lock, was source for a number of the sandstone blocks cut for the canal locks and local buildings. Some of these massive, multi-ton stones from the days of locks and mills remain strewn around the path and quarry floor, which is also home to a small, shallow swamp filled with cattails and the lovely pink Sabatia angularis. The trailhead also provides convenient access to the river, popular fishing spots, and nearby Towpath Trail.
