Quarry Trail Details
This historic trail loops around the old sandstone quarry near Lock 28. Traveling beyond the piles of abandoned millstones and building blocks scattered near the trailhead, the trail dips into the quarry to allow for further exploration of the site. Look for the blast marks in the quarry walls that show where sandstone was removed before being used in the construction of Akron City Hospital, the Cleveland breakwall, and the country's first oatmeal factory! The trail leaves the quarry and heads back toward the trailhead via an old railroad bed surrounded by other crumbling building foundations.
