Deep Lock Quarry Details
Berea sandstone quarried here was used to construct the Ohio & Erie Canal as well as many homes and public buildings throughout northeast Ohio, including the massive Cuyahoga River breakwater in Cleveland. The quarry operated from 1830 to 1930, and you can still find traces scattered about Deep Lock Quarry Park, including mill stones and old rails once used to move cut rock from the quarry to the canal. Nearby Lock 28 is the deepest lock on the Ohio & Erie Canal, with a main chamber that is 17 feet deep; you can visit both the quarry and the lock by following the 1.2-mile Quarry Trail from the park's parking lot.
