Boston Store to Lock 29 (Towpath Trail) Details

This portion of the Towpath Trail twists and turns along the Cuyahoga River through Stumpy Basin. The basin, which got its name from the tree stumps left in place when the area was cleared, floods seasonally, and the trail crosses it via a long boardwalk that provides good opportunities for watching marsh wildlife. After passing through a tunnel underneath the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad tracks, the trail ends in the village of Peninsula, where the surprisingly intact remains of Lock 29 are located. Unlike most locks on the Ohio & Erie Canal, Lock 29 is the only one made completely from sandstone, whereas the others were reinforced with concrete.
