Slump Block Pullout Details
The Slump Block Pullout offers a look at the effect of erosion on the landscape. To the right, you'll see a small hill with a larger cliff beyond: the former has detached from the latter. Here, a stream ran through underlying sediments, creating instability and ultimately a weakened base that could not support the top of the cliff. Look closely at the layers of sediment and you may be able to see where the hill and cliff once fit together. Slumping is a type of erosion that is also known as "mass wasting." It occurs when the foundation of a landmass is altered and cannot support its full weight. Gravity and water conspire to weaken, then breaks apart, supporting soil particles. A section of rock layers and/or sediment will then slide, or slump, a short distance downward without breaking apart. This pullout is wheelchair-accessible.
