Horseback Riding Details
Horseback riding is permitted in Theodore Roosevelt National Park, giving visitors the opportunity to discover the Badlands environment as Roosevelt once did. Horseback riders are allowed on most trails and in the backcountry. They must stay off the park roadways and nature trails and out of campgrounds and picnic areas. Horse camping is allowed in either the backcountry or at the Roundup Group Horse Campground, located in the northeastern corner of the South Unit. This campground is open May 1 to Oct. 31 by reservation only. A free permit is required for overnight excursions in the backcountry, with a limit of eight horses and eight riders per group. All backcountry camping rules apply.
