Hiking Details
The more than 100 miles of hiking trails in Theodore Roosevelt National Park lead visitors through the unique landscape of the badlands, including grassy prairies, dense juniper forests, barren plateaus, and plenty of bizarre looking geological formations. The Little Missouri River meanders through much of the park and can be seen from viewpoints along many trails. All skill levels are covered, from short, paved interpretive trails to moderate day hikes and unmaintained backcountry trails. Unique attractions include the Petrified Forest, prairie dog towns, coal veins, erosional slumps, and cannonball concretions. The Maah Daah Hey Trail, a 96-mile singletrack trail, goes through all three units of the park but is most easily accessed in the South Unit. The North Unit is more remote and less traveled than the South Unit if you are looking for solitude on the trails. The park is open year-round, and hikers are welcome on the established trails or in the backcountry. A jaunt into the North Dakota wilderness should not be taken lightly, and all hikers should be prepared with drinking water, apparel, and sun cover. See the [Trail and Hiking Safety](https://www.nps.gov/thro/planyourvisit/trail-and-hiking-safety.htm) and the [backcountry regulations](https://www.nps.gov/thro/planyourvisit/backcountry-camping.htm) more information.
