Bentonitic Clay Overlook Details
Bentonitic Clay Overlook is a scenic lookout showing a panorama of buttes across the badlands. In particular, look for the blueish-gray bentonite clay across the top of the buttes and within their layers. Some of the clay layers are 25 feet thick, which make them easily visible from afar. Bentonite clay is a substance created from the deposition of volcanic ash that traveled hundreds of miles from the west millions of years ago. The clay is extremely absorbent, and will become very slippery and dangerous if encountered along trails. When it is layered within rock and becomes wet, the clay will swell and may end up running down the slope of the rock.
