Plan Around Backcountry Information
A good stop is not just something to read about. Once it belongs on the day, move into a saved trip and build the route around it.
Use this detail page to confirm that the stop is worth it, then carry that decision into a trip draft while the park context is still fresh.
Backcountry Information Details
Backcountry camping in the park is permitted with a free permit and limited to 14 consecutive days. Then, it's all up to you: there are no established campsites or approved water sources, so all drinking and cooking water must be carried in. Weather conditions can change quickly and drastically no matter the season. Awareness of shelter location and evacuation routes are paramount to staying safe during possible flash floods or other sudden and severe weather. Winter camping is allowed, but backcountry campers need to be well-prepared. See the park site for their [Backcountry Use Regulations](https://www.nps.gov/thro/planyourvisit/backcountry-camping.htm). Seasonal canoeing and kayaking are allowed on the Little Missouri River. See the park [website](https://www.nps.gov/thro/planyourvisit/canoeing-kayaking.htm) for trip-planning recommendations and information.
