Wildlife Viewing Details
Home to over 66 species of mammals and 240 species of birds, not to mention reptiles, amphibians, and fish, Great Smoky Mountains National Park provides a wonderful opportunity to observe the wild fauna of the region. Viewing wildlife can be difficult, but in areas like Cataloochee and Cades Cove, sightings are plentiful, particularly in early morning or evening hours when the park is quiet and the air is cooler. All animals should be viewed with caution, keeping in mind that if a visitor's behavior changes the animal's behavior, the visitor is probably too close to the animal, and is at risk of a possible, although unlikely, attack. Do NOT feed wildlife, as it is against federal law and unhealthy for wildlife.
