Water Safety Details
There are lots of beautiful waterfalls, ponds, and streams in Great Smoky Mountain National Park, but unfortunately, drowning and other water-related injuries are the most common causes of death in the park. It is not recommended that visitors attempt any form of water recreation, including swimming, diving, or boating, and those wishing to bypass this precaution should remember that rangers are not always able to perform timely rescues. To prevent injuries, hikers should take caution near waterfalls and along riverbanks, where rocks and trails may be slippery. If sudden rainstorms cause flash flooding, it is best to avoid stream crossings until water levels have subsided, as hidden hazards and fast water can be huge factors in water-related injury.
