Parkwide Facilities Details
Visitors with disabilities are encouraged to take advantage of Great Smoky Mountain National Park's many accommodations. Temporary parking permits are available from Sugarlands and Oconaluftee Visitor Centers, but will only be granted when the disabled recipient is present. The park also offers a number of auto-touring guides and booklets for some of the less crowded areas of the park, and a half-mile paved trail just south of Sugarlands Visitor Center featuring hands-on exhibits about the social and natural history of the Smoky Mountains. Unfortunately, the rest of the trails in the National Park tend to be steep and sometimes rough, and not suited for those with mobility disabilities. Three campgrounds, Cades Cove, Elkmont, and Smokemont offer modified "accessible units," which include paving, and specialized tables and fire grills located close to accessible restrooms.
