Mount Sterling Trail Details

Of the few different ways to access the summit of Mt. Sterling, this trail is shortest, and the most popular. Named after the silvery-colored lead found in the Pigeon River, the wide, well-maintained trail ascends over 2000 feet in 3 miles through old coniferous forests. Although the 5,842-foot summit is wooded with tall firs and red spruce, there is an abandoned fire tower that rises over 60 feet for breathtaking panoramas of Balsam Mountain, Luftee Knob, and the Cataloochee Valley. Take caution when climbing the tower, as the park no longer maintains it.
