Kuwohi (Clingmans Dome) Details
Half in North Carolina and half in Tennessee, Kuwohi is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains and the third-highest peak east of the Mississippi River, standing at 6,643 feet above sea level. It is also the highest point along the Appalachian Trail. The Cherokee originally called the mountain Kuwohi, meaning "the mulberry place." It was later known as Smoky Dome before being renamed in honor of Thomas Lanier Clingman, a Civil War general who explored and promoted the Smokies. Ironically, Clingman argued - incorrectly - that it was the tallest peak in the range, but Mount Mitchell stands about 39 feet higher.
