Indian Gap Details
The Cherokee for centuries followed a trail through this pass in the Smoky Mountains, and Indian Gap continued to serve as a major east-west transit point through the mountains until 1872, when geographers determined that Newfound Gap, two miles to the east, was lower. The rugged road through Indian Gap, built in 1839, was soon bypassed by a road through Newfound Gap.
