Historical Buildings Details

Early life in the Great Smoky Mountains was tough, and settlers built sturdy log homes to protect themselves against the elements and attacks from hostile Native American tribes. More than 80 of these log homes still survive within the park, including in Cades Cove, Cataloochee, Oconaluftee, and along the Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. Other historic structures in the park include grist mills, churches, schools, and barns.
