Hiking Safety Details
Although National Park rangers are always prepared to perform rescue missions in extreme cases, it remains the hiker's responsibility to ensure his or her own safety. Hikers should be aware of the potential for flash floods, animal crossings, rainstorms, and other hazards that are common in the Smoky Mountains, and follow some basic guidelines. Always hike with a partner, and bring an up-to-date trail map, adequate water, and a small first aid kit. Wear appropriate footwear and dress in layers, providing for sudden showers. Rangers also recommend against attempts to cross flooded streams, as crossings can prove quite dangerous.
