Gregory Bald Details
This bald, one of the two maintained by the park, is best known for the vibrant display of multicolored azaleas in June, and it's bountiful wild blueberry bushes in August. The trail begins in an old, dying hemlock forest and climbs through groves of pines and hardwoods before reaching the nearly 10-acre meadow at the mountain's summit. The ascent is steep, and quite difficult in places, but offers the reward of stunning views of Cades Cove, Rich Mountain, and Thunderhead Mountain from the lush, flower-filled peak. Named after an early Cades Cove settler that was killed by rogue Confederate soldiers, the trail is once a part of the Appalachian Trail, which was later rerouted to exclude the 4,949-foot bald.
