Henry Whitehead Place Details

There are actually two log cabins at the Henry Whitehead Place, each with an interesting story. The original home was built in the 1880s for Matilda Shields Gregory by her brothers, after her husband deserted her and her two sons. Later, widower Henry Whitehead -- who had three daughters -- married Matilda and built the larger cabin to house the combined family. This home is considered one of the finest remaining examples of log construction in the Smoky Mountains. It's called a transition house because its mill-cut logs and finely finished interior bridged the gap between log cabins and the framed houses that came later.
