Cataloochee Valley Details

In its long history, this remote mountain valley has served as a refuge for Cherokee indians trying to avoid deportation and for people who refused to take sides with either north or south during the Civil War. Today, Cataloochee provides a haven for travelers who want a taste of mountain history away from the crowds at Cades Cove. You have to work a bit to get here: The only way into the Cataloochee Valley is a narrow, winding 11-mile road. The Cherokee once hunted buffalo here; later settlers had to fight off bear and mountain lions. You can visit historic homes like that of legendary bear hunter Turkey George, hike through old-growth forests along the Boogerman Trail, and look for the elk that frequently roam the valley's fields.
