Cable Mill Historic Area Details
The most popular stop in Cades Cove is ironically one of the least authentic -- unlike in the rest of the valley, most of the buildings you see here were once located elsewhere. However, the Park Service's decision to relocate so many historic structures in one place does make touring very easy. Paths lead from building to building, including a blacksmith shop, barns, mills, a molasses furnace, and homes. The John P. Cable grist mill, built in 1870, is the only building original to the Cable Mill site. Powered by a water wheel, it served as both a grist mill and saw mill. The Cantilever Barn is a European design with overhanging beams that provided extra storage as well as shelter for farm animals in bad weather. The Drive-Through Barn you see here is less spacious but allowed for easy loading of hay from the loft onto wagons. The Gregg-Cable House was the first frame home built in Cades Cove, finished in 1879. Sorghum cane was used to produce molasses at the Cane Mill and Molasses Furnace.
