White Sands National Park History Details

The dazzling gypsum dunes of White Sands have a rich history, not only as a stunning natural wonder but also as a place of human habitation, exploration, and conservation efforts. The story of White Sands as a protected area began in the early 20th century, but the landscape itself has been shaped over thousands of years. The dunes began forming around 7,000-10,000 years ago, as Lake Otero, which once covered the Tularosa Basin, dried up. Over time, wind and water sculpted the vast sea of gypsum sand we see today. Indigenous peoples, including the Jornada Mogollon and later the Mescalero Apache, lived in and around the basin for centuries, leaving behind evidence of their presence through petroglyphs, pottery, and ancient trails. Spanish explorers arrived in the 1500s, followed by American settlers and ranchers in the 19th century, all drawn to the region's resources. By the early 1900s, some locals saw the dunes as a potential national monument, while others wanted to mine the gypsum for commercial use. After decades of advocacy, White Sands was officially designated a national monument in 1933 by President Herbert Hoover, preserving its unique landscape. In 2019, it was re-designated as White Sands National Park, increasing its recognition and protection. Today, White Sands is not only a place of breathtaking beauty but also an area of ongoing scientific discovery. Fossilized footprints found in the dunes reveal that humans lived here over 20,000 years ago, challenging previous historical timelines. The park continues to be a treasured site for visitors, researchers, and local communities, ensuring that its history remains preserved for future generations.
