White Sands Missile Range Details
White Sands Missile Range (WSMR) is one of the most historically significant military testing sites in the United States. Established during World War II in the vast Tularosa Basin of southern New Mexico, it was originally called White Sands Proving Grounds. The site was chosen for its remote location, ideal for testing cutting-edge military technology away from populated areas. Alongside the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range-now Holloman Air Force Base-WSMR became a cornerstone of U.S. military research and development. One of the most pivotal moments in the site's history was the Trinity test on July 16, 1945. As the location of the first atomic bomb detonation, it marked the dawn of the nuclear age. Conducted approximately 65 miles north of White Sands, this test was a key milestone in the Manhattan Project, ultimately influencing the end of World War II. The test's massive explosion lit up the desert sky and demonstrated the immense power of atomic weaponry. Following the war, WSMR transitioned into a premier center for missile and rocket research. Under Operation Paperclip, German scientists, including Wernher von Braun, were brought to the U.S. to advance American rocketry. White Sands became the testing ground for the captured V-2 rockets, laying the groundwork for future space exploration. As the Cold War intensified, WSMR played a crucial role in developing intercontinental ballistic missiles and other defense technologies. By the 1960s, WSMR had become a key player in space exploration. NASA established the White Sands Test Facility in 1963, using the site for rocket engine testing and astronaut training. The White Sands Space Harbor was even designated as an alternative landing site for space shuttle missions. Today, WSMR remains at the forefront of military and aerospace innovation. Visitors can explore its history at the White Sands Missile Range Museum, and the Trinity Site is open to the public twice a year.
