White Sands Missile Range Museum Details
Tucked just inside the Las Cruces gate of the U.S. Army's sprawling White Sands Missile Range, this museum is where the Space Age, the Nuclear Age, and the Cold War all swap stories over coffee. Founded in 1994 to safeguard the Range's artifacts and lore, it emerged from a multi-year facelift with a Star Wars-worthy grand reopening in May 2023, sporting polished galleries and brand-new interpretation panels. Inside Building 203 you'll meet one of the world's most complete V-2 rockets-its metal skin peeled back so you can ogle the Nazi-era plumbing that jump-started modern rocketry. Interactive exhibits walk you from the Trinity atomic test of 1945 through Redstone, Pershing, Nike and Patriot missiles, right up to present-day missile-defense tech. Step outside and the Missile Park is basically a desert forest of hardware: more than 50 missiles, drones and test vehicles (look for the chunky "Fat Man" casing lounging in the sand) lined up against the jagged Organ Mountains backdrop-Instagram gold even for non-propulsion nerds. Admission is free, hours are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday-Saturday, but because you're entering an active test range you'll need a visitor pass, photo ID, vehicle registration and insurance (background check included). Plan a half-day, bring water, and remember-here, "What could possibly go wrong?" was once an engineering prompt.
