Visiting with Pets Details
Bringing your furry friend to White Sands can be a fun and memorable experience, but it's important to follow park guidelines to keep both pets and wildlife safe. Pets must always be on a leash no longer than six feet to prevent them from wandering off, encountering hazards like cacti or rattlesnakes, or disturbing the delicate ecosystem. Cleaning up after your pet is essential to keeping the park clean, and waste bags are available at designated pet walking stations near the visitor center. Hydration is also key-White Sands' desert climate can lead to rapid dehydration, so make sure your pet has plenty of water and take breaks in the shade when needed. While pets are welcome in most outdoor areas, they are not allowed inside the visitor center or gift shop. Service animals, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are the exception and may accompany their owners in all facilities and on all trails unless closures are in place for conservation efforts. Leaving pets unattended, especially in vehicles, is strictly prohibited, as temperatures inside cars can rise to dangerous levels within minutes, even on mild days. By keeping your pet leashed, hydrated, and safe from extreme heat, you can enjoy the breathtaking dunes together while respecting the park's natural beauty.
