Ranger Programs Details
White Sands offers a variety of ranger-led programs that bring the park's unique landscape to life through guided hikes, educational talks, and hands-on activities. One of the most popular experiences is the Sunset Stroll, a one-hour walk where rangers explain the formation of the dunes and how wildlife and plants survive in this extreme environment. The Moonlight Hike, offered the night before a full moon from March through December, transforms the dunes into an otherworldly landscape as the bright gypsum sand reflects the moon's glow. Expanding on nighttime experiences, the Full Moon Night program extends park hours once a month from May through October, sometimes featuring special presentations under the moonlit sky. For those fascinated by geology, the Lake Lucero Tour provides a rare opportunity to visit the birthplace of the dunes, where selenite crystals break down into fine gypsum sand. Additionally, Drop-in Programs occur spontaneously throughout the park, offering visitors flexible opportunities to engage with rangers on topics like wildlife and conservation. Young adventurers can participate in the Junior Ranger Program, completing fun challenges to earn their Junior Dunes Ranger badge. Whether exploring the park at sunset, under the moon, or through hands-on activities, these ranger-led programs provide deeper connections to White Sands' rich natural and cultural history.
