Natural Features & Ecosystems Details
White Sands is a remarkable natural wonder, home to unique ecosystems shaped by its striking gypsum dunes, ancient lakebeds, and surrounding desert landscapes. While it may appear barren at first glance, this environment supports a surprising variety of life that has adapted to its extreme conditions. At the heart of the park are the brilliant white gypsum dunes, the largest of their kind in the world. These ever-shifting formations are created from the erosion of selenite crystals, which break down into fine sand and are carried by the wind. The dunes create a harsh but beautiful environment where only specialized plants and animals can survive. Some, like the White Sands pupfish and bleached earless lizard, have evolved unique adaptations to thrive in this unusual habitat. Beyond the dunes, the park includes other important ecosystems. The playa, or dry lakebed, occasionally fills with water during heavy rains, providing a temporary but critical habitat for migratory birds and amphibians. The alkali flat, another striking feature, is a barren expanse of hardened minerals where few plants can grow.
