Native Peoples and Early Settlers Details
White Sands has been home to diverse cultures for more than 10,000 years, with evidence of early human presence found in fossilized footprints, prehistoric tools, and ancient fire pits. The earliest known inhabitants, Paleo-Indians, were Ice Age hunters who tracked mammoths and giant sloths across the region. As the climate changed and large game disappeared, their descendants, the Jornada Mogollon people, settled in the area, farming corn, beans, and squash. They built pit houses, created petroglyphs, and crafted pottery, but by the 1400s, their civilization mysteriously vanished-possibly due to drought or migration. By the 1600s, the Mescalero Apache had established a strong presence, adapting to the harsh desert environment as skilled hunters and warriors. The arrival of Spanish explorers in the late 1500s introduced horses, Christianity, and trade but also led to conflicts over land and resources. The 19th century saw the arrival of settlers, ranchers, and the U.S. military, further transforming the region. Today, the Mescalero Apache and other Indigenous communities maintain their cultural traditions and connection to the land, ensuring White Sands remains not just a place of natural beauty, but also one of deep historical significance.
