Getting Here: Directions & Transportation Details

The park, located in southern New Mexico, is a breathtaking destination known for its vast, shimmering dunes. Getting there requires a bit of planning, as transportation options are limited, but the journey is well worth the effort. The park's entrance sits directly off U.S. Highway 70, between the cities of Alamogordo and Las Cruces. From Alamogordo, it's a quick 15-mile drive west, while visitors coming from Las Cruces will need to travel about 52 miles east. The entrance is easy to spot, just past mile marker 200 on the north side of the highway. For those coming from El Paso, Texas, there are two primary routes. One option is to take I-10 West toward Las Cruces, then connect to I-25 North before merging onto U.S. Highway 70 East toward Alamogordo. The other route follows U.S. Highway 54 East directly to Alamogordo before heading west on U.S. Highway 70. Both options span about 85 miles and take approximately an hour and a half. Air travelers will find the closest major airport in El Paso, about 85 miles south of the park. Since there is no direct public transportation to White Sands, renting a car is the best way to reach the park from the airport or nearby cities. Fueling up before entering the park is essential, as there are no gas stations or electric vehicle charging stations within its boundaries. The nearest options for fuel are in Alamogordo or Las Cruces, with more charging stations available in Las Cruces. Once inside, visitors can explore the dunes via the scenic Dunes Drive, an eight-mile stretch that winds through the heart of the park. The round-trip drive covers 16 miles and takes about 45 minutes, though stopping to explore, hike, or photograph the landscape is highly recommended. With a little preparation, reaching White Sands is a straightforward and rewarding adventure.
