Bicycling Details
Cycling at White Sands is a one-of-a-kind experience, offering riders the chance to pedal through a vast gypsum dunefield on the park's hard-packed sand road. The 16-mile round-trip along Dunes Drive begins with four miles of smooth pavement before transitioning to packed gypsum. While generally firm, this section can be unpredictable, featuring "washboard" surfaces, potholes, and sand drifts. Mountain bikes or beach cruisers with wide tires are best suited for the terrain, as road bikes with narrow tires may struggle. Safety is key, as Dunes Drive is a narrow, winding road shared with vehicles of all sizes. Cyclists should ride single-file, stay alert around blind curves, and wear helmets-required by law for those under 18. Given the harsh desert climate, bringing at least two liters of water, sunscreen, and high-energy snacks is essential. Off-road biking is strictly prohibited to protect the fragile dunes, so riders must stay on designated park roads. Checking road conditions before heading out is wise, especially after rain or snow, as the gypsum surface can become slick. With the right preparation, biking through White Sands offers a breathtaking and unforgettable ride.
