Wildlife Details
There are 67 species of mammals the park. Some, like the black bear and spotted skunk, are rare. Others, like the Pronghorn and the Javelina, are the product of an extensive reintroduction program that returns regionally extinct species to the desert. Rocky Mountain Elk were brought to this area in the late 1900s, after the region's native Merriam's Elk went extinct. The park is also home to deer, rabbits, mice, rats, voles, coyotes, fox, mountain lion, bobcats, badgers and weasels. There are also 46 species of reptile in the park, including rattlesnakes and several other non-poisonous snakes and lizards. In the cave you'll also find a variety of beetles, cicadas, stink bugs, crickets, grasshoppers and other insets and cave-dwelling isopods. At Rattlesnake Springs you might see crayfish. If you are a birder, you'll be thrilled to encounter some of the park's over 350 species of birds, including woodpeckers, wrens, sparrows, mockingbirds, as well as rare species like Bell's Vireo, Gray Vireo and Varied Bunting.
